The Irish drama series will air later this year
Sally Rooney's highly anticipated adaptation of her novel 'Normal People' will exclusively air for Irish audiences on RTE One later this spring.
The series, which was originally set to only be released online only via UK broadcaster BBC Three, will find a home on the Irish broadcaster later this year. 'Normal People' is based on the Sally Rooney novel of the same name, where we follow the drama between Marianne and Connell and their complicated relationship in Ireland.
Marianne will be played by British actress Daisy Edgar Jones ('War of the Worlds', 'Cold Feet'), and rising Irish actor Paul Mescal (Martin McDonagh's recent Gaiety Theatre production of 'The Lieutenant of Inishmore') will play Connell. Sarah Greene ('Dublin Murders') also co-stars in the first series, which was filmed last year on location in Sligo, Dublin, Sweden, and Italy.
'Normal People' is an Element Pictures production, and has been directed by the Oscar-nominated film-maker Lenny Abrahamson and the English director Hettie MacDonald.
Earlier this year it was announced that Sally Rooney's first novel 'Conversations with Friends' had also been given a series with the BBC, which will be a continuation of the first series of 'Normal People'. Rooney, as well as the Abrahamson and MacDonald are expected to make a return for the second series.
While no official air date has been announced for 'Normal People' just yet, we do know that the highly-anticipated Irish drama series will have 12 episodes.
It's welcoming to see that RTE One will be airing the Sally Rooney coming-of-age series. Just last week, the broadcaster announced its slate for their "We're In This Together" line-up, including the arrival of 'Derry Girls' and season three of 'Killing Eve'.
