We love a morbid yet uplifting series, don't we?
The Irish docuseries has *ahem* reel appeal.
RTÉ's 'Reeling in the Years' 2010s edition has broken all records to be crowned the most popular edition ever.
According to RTÉ, this sixth season has been watched more, on average, than any other previous season. When airing on Sunday evenings, the show draws in an audience of 520,000 people, while so far there have been 250,000 streams on the RTÉ Player. This is also the first year that the series is available to watch on demand.
As expected, 'Reeling in the Years' 2010s has been most popular in the 15 to 34s age group. Given that we all remember these 10 years quite vividly, appealing to us more so than the '70s or '80s editions, for example, it makes sense that we'd head back to revisit the happenings of the decade.
Delving into the archives of the past 10 years, the highlights from the past seven episodes included the uproar over Garth Brooks at Croke Park, Katie Taylor winning gold in the Olympics, Rihanna running around a Northern Irish farmer's field, as well as The Queen and Barack Obama's visits to Ireland in 2011.
Producer John O’Regan said of this milestone for the Irish production: "This is the 6th series of 'Reeling in the Years' and we are delighted to see that the audience ratings are the highest ever for a first run of broadcast. The production aim of the programme has always been the same – to offer RTÉ viewers a selection of stories from news, sport, current affairs, and entertainment, with a soundtrack that showcases Irish music along with some of the biggest international hits of a year."
There are only two episodes left of the 'Reeling in the Years' 2010s season. This Sunday’s episode looks back at 2018, the year the 'Beast From The East' brought blizzards and freezing temperatures across the country. Pope Francis came to Ireland on a two-day visit, and we went to the polls in a referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment.
Catch the series on RTÉ One at 8.30pm on Sunday evenings. You can also watch on catch up via the RTÉ Player.
