Although the new season had its moments, it's safe to say that the return of The X-Files wasn't anywhere near as good as we could have hoped for.
That said, there was more than enough goodwill to sustain it through and reminded us that Dana Scully and Fox Mulder have been sadly missing from our lives these past few years. Work is now officially underway for the latest season of The X-Files and, going by the cliffhanger from the last season, there's a lot still to come and stories still to tell.
When we last saw Mulder, he was trapped and facing into the prospect of death from the alien virus that was sweeping the planet. Scully, meanwhile, was racing towards and the final scene saw her looking up at what appeared to be some kind of alien craft.
So, what can we determine from this first image? Not. A. F**king. Thing.
According to showrunner / creator Chris Carter, "something unexpected has happened" and effectively seen Scully and Mulder swap places. Going further in the new season, it looks they're not out of the woods by any stretch of the imagination. Carter says that characters such as Scully and Mulder's son, William, will feature heavily in the new season and so will the Cigarette Smoking Man and his apparent ties to Mulder's family.
Not only that, a brand-new character played by veteran actress Barbara Hershey will also make an appearance and our own favourite, Assistant Director Skinner - played by the always reliable Mitch Pileggi - will be returning for the new series.
The new season of The X-Files will return in early 2018.
