'TWD' - The franchise that keeps on going
There's another planned spinoff in the works, based around two central characters from the AMC survival/horror series.
A Negan and Maggie 'The Walking Dead' spinoff series is in development, with stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohen reprising their roles from the main series.
The new production will be entitled 'Isle Of The Dead' and will see the characters embark on a new journey together in a New York City which has been overrun with, yep, you guessed it, zombies.
The first season of 'Isle Of The Dead' will comprise of six episodes and is set to premiere in 2023. 'The Walking Dead' writer Eli Jorné will serve as showrunner, while Morgan and Cohan are also on board as executive producers.
Maggie and Negan have been popular characters in 'The Walking Dead' TV series for quite some time. Maggie, who originally appeared all of the way back in season two on the Greene Family Farm that eventually became a zombie-infested hideout, has become a bad-ass and natural leader as the series progressed. Exiting the show in season nine, the character returned for the series' final season.
Negan, meanwhile, was first introduced as the main antagonist during the season six finale, having been a major player in the comic series. For over two seasons he made the Rick Grimes-led group's life hell with his trademark barbed-wire bat named Lucille. The leader of The Saviours, once his group were defeated, he's now become an ally for the main characters.
Executive producer on the season, Scott Gimple, said of this new spinoff: "Eli [ Jorné] has created a chaotic, beautiful, grimy madhouse of the dead for Negan, Maggie, and fans of the show eager to discover an unseen and insane world of the 'TWD' Universe.
"Lauren and Jeffrey have always been fantastic collaborators and now, we bring that collaboration to the next level with a series that will take these characters to their limits with the world — and each other. All of us are thrilled to take you on an all-new, all-different 'TWD' epic for the ages.”
'Isle Of The Dead' is only the newest in a long string of upcoming 'Walking Dead' content. 'Tales Of The Walking Dead' will be an anthology series set to premiere later this year, as well as an as-yet-untitled Carol and Daryl project also set for 2023. They join the three Rick Grimes spinoff movies that are also expected at some point in the future.
Season 11 of 'The Walking Dead' is currently streaming on Disney+.
