"I’m still confused. I’ll be honest with you."
Eleven years after the season six finale, whereby most of the islanders were reunited in a church with a whitish glow, it's still a huge bone of contention as to what the hell the whole series was about.
And it turns out that the actor who played Sawyer in the series has no idea what happened either. Josh Holloway, who played the devilishly handsome rogue who always seemed to be pointing a gun at someone on that island, has admitted he's "still confused" by the 'Lost' ending.
After those credits rolled in 2010, fans caused uproar. Essentially, we were lead down the garden path, with no real payoff at the end. The two-and-a-half-hour finale culminated with Matthew Fox's Jack reuniting with his past islanders in a church, after his fight with The Man in Black. Were they all dead all along? Were they in Purgatory? Did any of this really happen?
This ambiguous ending wasn't really helped by series creator J.J. Abrams, who compared the 'Lost' ending with the briefcase that was left unanswered in 'Pulp Fiction'. He, Jeffrey Lieber, and Damon Lindelof always denied any fan theories that were suggested.
All these years later, the series is something that is still revered as one of the biggest "cop-outs" in TV history. Investing in six seasons of a TV series, and being provided with no real explanation at the end? Our blood still boils.
Luckily we're not the only ones still contemplating 'Lost', as Josh Holloway has had similar thoughts all these years later. He told Vulture:
I’m still confused. I’ll be honest with you. I think that’s one theory. We could have all been dead. Or we could have been in like this purgatory thing. I always thought that, and still do kind of really think it was more that. To me, that’s what makes more sense. Then they kind of sidestepped it with the parallel life at the end. But I don’t know, because they always said, 'No, it’s not purgatory.'
