Jodie Whittaker has been named as the 13th Doctor in the long-running BBC sci-fi series.
The announcement was made today just after the Wimbledon Men's Finals, with Peter Capaldi leaving the role behind after serving in the role since 2013. Capaldi took over from Matt Smith, who in turn took over from David Tennant.

As well as Capaldi leaving the show, showrunner Steven Moffat is also leaving the show and is being replaced by Broadchurch's Chris Chibnall. Moffat had been involved in Doctor Who since 2004, and became executive producer in 2008.
Whittaker worked previously Chris Chibnall, where she played Beth Latimer in the BBC series.
Jodie Whittaker was one of many names who was said to be in the running for the role. Names like Kris Marshall, Natalie Dormer, Hayley Atwell, Olivia Colman, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Richard Ayoade were all said to be in the running to replace Peter Capaldi - however Whittaker won out in the end.
Jodie Whittaker will appear in the Christmas episode of Doctor Who, The Doctors, where Capaldi's doctor will regenerate into Whittaker.
