They've already given us House of Cards, Hemlock Grove, and a brand new series of Arrested Development to look forward to, and now the good folks over at Netflix are pulling another original series out of the bag. Orange is the New Black is the brainchild of Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, and will be streamed exclusively online on Netflix this July.
Based on the US best-selling memoir by Piper Kerman, the comedy-drama tells the tale of a young Brooklynite (Taylor Schilling) whose decade-old relationship with a drug runner (played by That 70's Show star Laura Prepon) results in her arrest and year-long stay in the slammer. American Pie star Jason Biggs plays Piper's fiance, whom she must leave behind as she trades her comfortable New York life for a rather interesting orange jumpsuit. This little lady is going to have to learn how to survive in the big bad world of the womens' prison...
The 13 episode series will be available on Netflix in Ireland from 12:01am on Thursday July 11th, and like the Netflix originals before it, you can stream all 13 episodes that very day.
"With Orange is the New Black Jenji Kohan has created a dramatic yet deeply funny world populated with unforgettable characters and no-holds-barred humour set against the backdrop of a women’s prison," said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix. "Jenji is one of the most fearless voices in television and we are proud to share her uncompromising vision with Netflix members."
