There was an Irish political activist in Sporty Spice's family
'Who Do You Think You Are?' is a show that often throws up some unexpected discoveries.
In previous series, Danny Dyer famously discovered that he is a descendant of King Edward III - and the 'Eastenders' actor has wasted no opportunity to remind people of his royal bloodline ever since.
However, the new series will see two well-known English faces tracing their family history to Ireland.
Melanie Chisholm, aka Sporty Spice, is a well-known Scouser - but like a lot of people from Liverpool, hails from Irish ancestry. She traces her family lineage and "unearths a political activist and the story of how her family survived the Great Famine in Ireland," according to a BBC press release.
And while it shouldn't come as any surprise, given his name and the fact that both parents hail from Tipperary, Paddy McGuinness also features in the new series. The comedian, actor and TV host "discovers his grandfather's crucial role during World War Two and investigates his McGuinness surname in Ireland, discovering he nearly wasn't a McGuinness at all."
It's not the first time that a celebrity has been directed towards Ireland, as Boy George famously investigated his own extensive Irish family several years ago, visiting Glasnevin Cemetery and the Gravediggers pub for a sing-song with Lankum.
Other names digging into their family history on the new run of shows - which is the landmark 20th series - include Olly Murs, who traces his lineage to circus performers in Latvia, Gemma Collins, athlete Jessica Ennis-Hill, actress Vicky McClure and disability activist and 'Strictly Come Dancing' winner Rose Ayling-Ellis.
It launches on BBC this summer, date TBC.
