If there's one man in Ireland who's never stuck for words it's George Hook. The former rugby coach turned pundit and radio host is well known as one of our most outspoken individuals so when it comes to public speaking he's probably as experienced as they come.
That's why RTE called upon the proud Cork man when hunting for the perfect mentor for Dubliner David Wynne, who was absolutely terrified at the prospect of giving the best man's speech at his good pal Stephen's wedding. With one disastrous speech under his belt David was in dire need of some King's Speech style intervention.
Now you might think dealing with Mr Hook would be a fairly daunting task but the broadcaster was equally nervous about taking on this new challenge because he didn't know who he'd be working with. "There was a distinct possibility that I mightn't have been able to do it, that it mightn't work" he admits, but when he met David and got to know him that all changed.
"Extraordinary" is just one word he uses to describe his charge, whom he holds in the utmost esteem. "All of us are afraid of failing in front of 150 people, but this guy is prepared to fail in front of hundreds of thousands. That's incredible courage," he says. "I thought if a guy is this brave then we've got a chance here."
And sure Mr Hook wasn't always the confident speaker he is today either. "My own wedding", he chuckles as he recalls one of his own public speaking disasters: "Here's the star speaker and he makes a balls of his own wedding. And why did I make a balls of my own wedding? Because I broke all the basic rules. Number 1 I didn't prepare, I said it's my own wedding so, you know, I'll be grand. I also had a couple of drinks, which you never do."
George says that it was this experience that allowed him to offer David the help he needed. Determined to make sure that Wynne didn't suffer the same fate, he put the lad through his paces with a series of challenges and threw him in at the deep end from Day 1. Did it all pay off? Well, you'll have to tune in to find out. "I think people watching this will say 'that could be me' you know?" Hook says.
Now for the all-important question: Could we see George back on our TV screens for a full series based on this little show? "Well, let me put it this way. The lovely Ingrid to whom I'm devoted said to me once that the world should be ruled by ants because ants have a higher work ethic, are better organised and there are more of them", Hook begins. "However, the problem is that ants can't speak. So what sets us above everybody on this planet is that we can speak. So why is it that so many people are handicapped by their inability to do it?" He admits he's no TV producer, but can see potential for a series there.
Yet, he's not making any promises because he doesn't know what the future holds, and he still isn't sure whether the rather special one-off documentary could ever be replicated. We've seen the show and we're not going to lie, it's pretty enjoyable to say the least.
There's one thing he is certain about though: Nobody could tempt him off the radio to become a full time TV mentor.
Catch The Speech on RTE One at 6.30pm on Sunday December 22nd.
