We've said it quite a few times, but it's worth repeating - Reeling In The Years is the best programme RTE has ever produced.
We include Dempsey's Den, The Grip, Love / Hate and Scratch Saturday in that comment. It's a simple enough format; archive footage mixed with period music and text explaining or adding context to what's on screen.
Some of the music used has been particularly poignant. Our favourite has to be Mary Black's As I Leave Behind Neidin, which was used during an emotional sequence about the effect of immigration on Ireland during the '80s.
In short, the music has been nothing short of fantastic throughout, but there hasn't been any kind of official soundtrack released for it.
Lucy Byrne went out and compiled 441 songs from the series, including Steely Dan's opening theme tune. The entire playlist lasts 24 hours, 53 minutes and has some great finds in there, including the previously mentioned Mary Black song.
