Star Ellen Pompeo said it herself
It has aired 363 episodes so far but this season of 'Grey's Anatomy' could be its last.
The revelation comes from Ellen Pompeo, who is of course the (Meredith) Grey of 'Grey's Anatomy'.
In an interview with Variety, the lead actress indicated that the end of the medical drama could be in sight.
She said: "We don't know when the show is really ending yet. But the truth is, this year could be it."
The actress posed for the cover of this month's issue of the publication alongside showrunner Krista Vernoff, director Debbie Allen and co-star Chandra Wilson.
'Grey's Anatomy' debuted in March 2005. It is the longest running medical drama on television, as well as channel ABC's longest running scripted show.
Its creator Shonda Rhimes left ABC and moved her Shondaland production company to Netflix in 2017.
Between her and so many major stars departing the show, including Justin Chambers most recently, it would seem almost everyone has moved on.
Still the success of the show has meant that Ellen Pompeo - the only one who has been there from the start aside from Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. - rightly became the highest paid actress in a drama series in 2018.
But that was when her contract was renewed for two more seasons. It ends with the upcoming season 17.
As the actress notes: "I'm constantly fighting for the show as a whole to be as good as it can be. As a producer, I feel like I have permission to be able to do that.
"I mean, this is the last year of my contract right now. I don't know that this is the last year, but it could very well could be."
Season 17, as was previously teased, will address the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is set to premiere on November 12, 2020.
