Winter is coming... to the theatre!
Hey, George, you do know we're still waiting on two more of your books, right?
While we impatiently await George R. R. Martin to finish up his two remaining 'A Song of Ice and Fire' books, he's only gone and put them on the long finger yet again. However, there is some good news coming out of all of this, as we'll be getting a 'Game of Thrones' play out of it.
The stage version of the book and TV series will be inspired by a moment often referred to - The Great Tourney at Harrenhal. Acting as a prequel to the main 'Game of Thrones' series, the play will take place during the events of the 10-day contest.
The storyline will place us 16 years prior to our first introduction to the series, and will feature younger versions of some of our favourite characters. Younger versions of Jaime Lannister, Rhaegar Targaryen, Robert Baratheon, and Oberyn Martell will feature, among others. A young Ned Stark and his sister Lyanna are also expected to feature heavily.
Prince Rhaegar Targaryen falls in love with Lyanna Stark by the end of the tourney, which will lead nicely into one of the biggest events in 'Game of Thrones' history, Robert's Rebellion.
Expected to launch on Broadway in the future, George R. R. Martin said this about his 'Game of Thrones' play: "The seeds of war are often planted in times of peace. Few in Westeros knew the carnage to come when highborn and smallfolk alike gathered at Harrenhal to watch the finest knights of the realm compete in a great tourney, during the Year of the False Spring.
"It is a tourney oft referred during HBO's 'Game of Thrones', and in my novels, 'A Song of Ice & Fire'… And now, at last, we can tell the whole story… On the stage."
Earlier this week, George R. R. Martin signed a new five-year, eight-figure deal, with HBO. With a number of 'Game of Thrones' projects in the pipeline, it seems the author and producer will be very busy with five different projects based on his fantasy novels.
We're still waiting on those books, George.
