Community and Mad Men star Alison Brie is returning to TV for a leading role in Netflix's upcoming original series, GLOW. The comedy is inspired by a short-lived but beloved show from the eighties and tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom through ladies wrestling.
Ruth finds herself working with 12 other Hollywood misfits and trying to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin) a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems. Leading these ladies to victory is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who is tasked with making these ladies wrestling stars.
It's certainly got a decent enough premise and there is some serious talent on board behind the scenes, as GLOW is created by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Nurse Jackie, Orange Is The New Black,Weeds), who also serve as showrunners. Orange Is the New Black's creator Jenji Kohan and Tara Herrmann executive produce.
In anticipation of the June 23 premiere of GLOW, Netflix has released a set of first look images from the upcoming comedy series.
