This is a true story.
The FX crime series will be back for its fifth instalment, which will take the series to the (near) present-day.
Noah Hawley's highly acclaimed dark comedy/crime creation 'Fargo' will return for a fifth season from TV network FX.
The crime series, which has been available in Ireland and the UK via TG4 and Channel 4 in the past, has been going strong since season one starring Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Colin Hanks and Allison Tolman. The first season was based on The Coen Brothers' Oscar-winning film of the same name starring Frances McDormand and William H. Macy.
Due to its success, TV series creator Noah Hawley managed to spin the concept into an anthology, setting each season afterwards in a different time in the past, but all based in the Mid-Western region of the US. The likes of Kirsten Dunst, Patrick Wilson, Ewan McGregor, Kieran Culkin and David Thewlis have all taken central roles during seasons two and three.
The most recent entry arrived in 2020 (airing on TG4 in 2021) and saw Chris Rock, Jessie Buckley, Ben Whishaw and Jason Schwartzman lead a storyline about two feuding families and crime syndicates who are vying for control in Kansas City.
'Fargo''s fifth season has yet to announce any attached cast members, but some minor plot details have been released. Set in the year 2019, the series will ask the following head-scratching questions: "When is a kidnapping not a kidnapping, and what if your wife isn’t yours?"
With Disney the parent company of FX, it will be interesting to see if 'Fargo' will be added to Disney+ at some point down the line. Other FX productions such as 'American Horror Story' and 'Legion' are already part of the streaming service.
Hawley and Warren Littlefield, Joel and Ethan Coen and Steve Stark will all return to the series to serve as executive producers. Expect more 'Fargo' season five announcements in the coming months.
The first three seasons of 'Fargo' are currently available to stream on Netflix. The 1996 film can be viewed on Prime Video.
