The Bank Holiday weekend is finally upon us and, now that Lent is almost over, we're looking forward to putting our feet up and munching on lots of chocolate while watching some quality television. Of course, flicking fruitlessly through the channels can get rather boring, so we thought we'd put together a handy guide to the best of the box this weekend to save you the bother!
From brand new TV shows to movie classics, we've got the ultimate guide to Easter TV, right here for your viewing pleasure:
GOOD FRIDAY
Kick off the bank holiday weekend this Good Friday by settling down in front of the telly. There's something for everyone this evening - no lie! Soap fans can kick back, relax and find out who ends up behind bars in Coronation Street at 7.30pm, as Kirsty's world begins to crumble around her in the aftermath of her altercation with Julie. Will the ditzy blonde get to the court on time to save Tyrone's skin? Or will Kirsty make a break for it with 'Baybeh Roobeh'?
If soaps aren't your thing then don't worry. Sure you can always catch Tubbs' Late Late Show on RTE1 from 9.35pm, or head on over to Channel 4 for evening of comedy from 9.00pm. Jimmy Carr and the boys will be having the craic on 8 Out of 10 Cats, Adam Hills will be giving it socks on the last leg of The Last Leg, while Russel Brand and Jools Holland will be catching up with the Chatty Man.
What We'll Be Watching
We think the best telly this Friday is to be found on Sky1, where JJ Abrams' Revolution makes its UK debut at 9.00pm. As if that wasn't enough, there will be brand new episodes of Modern Family, The Middle and Futurama from 7.30pm. So there's comedy, sci-fi comedy and a brand new dystopian sci-fi drama, PLUS we don't even need to change the channel? Sorted.
Pick of The Flicks
Let Ratatouille whip yourself and the kids into a frenzy on BBC One at 4.55pm, or pick a pocket or two with Fagan and the boys when Oliver hits the box on GOLD at 5.00pm. If you fancy a spot of Tom Cruise ahead of his Irish visit then be sure to catch him in sci-fi epic, War of The Worlds on BBC3 at 8pm. A rather young Ryan Gosling stars alongside Sandra Bullock in crime thriller Murder By Numbers on RTE Two at 9.10pm, Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones and Javier Bardem chew the scenery in No Country For Old Men on More4 at 10.00pm, and a young Jennifer Lawrence wows in 2010 drama Winter's Bone on BBC Two at 10.45pm. If you fancy a bit of feel good comedy later in the night, then be sure to catch Son of Rambow on BBC One at 11.50pm. It's a heart-warmingly odd coming of age comedy, that just so happens to feature Ed Westwick, aka Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl. He's rather typecast, poor chap.
SATURDAY
Lucy Kennedy's up early (we like a good lie in, what with the clocks going forward and all that) to tell us The Story of Chocolate on RTE Two at 12.10pm. Try to be strong: In less than 24 hours you can crack into those eggs! The action really kicks off later in the evening, when Doctor Who finally returns to our TV screens on BBC1 at 6.15pm, while Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway goes head to head with the new series of The Voice UK, on TV3 and BBC One respectively at 7pm. Hope Danny O'Donoghue, Jessie J, Tom Jones and Will.I.Am are ready to 'rhumble'...
If all that Saturday night family telly isn't really your thing, you can catch Leinster's RaboDirect Pro12 clash with Ulster on RTE 2 at 6.15pm, spy The Hobbit star James Nesbitt chatting to Jonathan Ross on UTV at 9.20pm, or watch Val Kilmer and Warwick Davis finally reunite for a Life's Too Short Special on BBC Two at 11.00pm.
What We'll Be Watching
We're big Downton Abbey fans here in the office, and I've got a rather big girl crush on Jessica Brown Findlay (Damn you Fellowes!) so tonight's telly pick is a no brainer. Jess joins forces with Tom Felton aka Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter, Katie McGrath from Merlin, and the legendary John Hurt for a brand new miniseries based on Kate Mosse's epic adventure novel, Labyrinth. It sounds rather interesting, so we'll most likely tune in.
Pick of The Flicks
We wondered why Ben Hur wasn't on the telly at Christmas, but now we've got our answer. RTE One were saving it for Saturday at 12.50pm. After the compulsory historical epic and March of The Penguins on UTV at 12.55pm, it's really all about the kids. See Lindsay Lohan during her glory days in Freaky Friday at 2.40pm over on BBC One, catch old favourite Little Giants on RTE Two at 4.05pm, and plonk the little 'uns down in front of the telly for Madagascar on RTE One at 6.35pm. You might find yourself glued to the screen when Edward Norton's Incredible Hulk springs into action on UTV at 3.20pm, and bite your fingernails while waiting to see what happens to Julia Roberts in The Pelican Brief on TV3 at 9.20pm. Catch the Goodfellas on Alibi at 10.00pm, scream about Sparta with Gerard Butler in 300 on UTV at 10.35pm, and have a late night laugh with Team America: World Police, over on Sky Atlantic at 11.20pm.
EASTER SUNDAY
Easter Sunday is a day for choc... we mean the family lads, so don't be spending too much time in front of the telly. There's chocolate to be eaten after all. After a long day making conversation with friends and relatives, you can always catch up on the latest developments in The Voice of Ireland on RTE One at 6.30pm, before joining the dearly departed Richard Briers and the very much alive Penelope Keith to find out All About The Good Life over on BBC Two at 7pm. Meet the Speed King straight after that at 8.00pm, before hearing over to BBC One to discover the good folk of The Village at 9.00pm. Keep your eyes peeled for Siobhan from Love/Hate: She's got a little role in the new BBC drama.
For a rather different batch of Easter Eggs, head over to Channel 4 at 8.00pm, and stick around to find out what happens in Labyrinth, which continues from last night at 9.00pm. And for the day that's in it, be sure to catch Would You Believe? Mick Peelo's talking about the new Pope and the Catholic Church over on RTE One at 10.30pm.
What We'll Be Watching
As you'll find out shortly, Easter Sunday really is all about the movies. There's just no end of 'em today, so we're most likely to be slumped in front of the couch watching The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader on Channel 4 at 5.50pm, The Hurt Locker on TV3 at 9.00pm and Enigma over on BBC Two at 11.00pm. Sure we're suckers for a bit of wartime drama.
Pick of The Flicks
Aside from the ones we've already mentioned, there are plenty of decent movies on offer today. Fans of Westerns can take their pick between The Searchers on RTE One at 2.50pm, and the 1969 version of True Grit on Channel 4 at 1.45pm. If you're after something a little lighter there's always The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor (the one without Rachel Weisz) on UTV at 4.00pm, or y'know, this little movie you might have heard of called Grease, which starts on E4 at 7.00pm. If you're after a sleepless night catch 28 Weeks Later on Channel 4 at 11.05pm, Blade Trinity on E4 at 9.15 pm, or alternatively, get dramatic with Jennifer Connelly and Ben Kingsley in House of Sand and Fog on BBC one at 11.45pm. Our Senior Ed, Caroline, fully recommends The Insider. Russel Crowe and Al Pacino star in the compelling drama, which starts on RTE Two at 9.00pm. Finally, there's a chance to catch Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen playing war correspondents in Hemingway and Gellhorn on Sky Atlantic at 9.00pm. Well, we did say we liked the genre...
BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY
You'll probably be feeling rather ill after all that chocolate, and come Easter Monday you'll be eating the stuff for breakfast, lunch and dinner. That's what you get for getting so many Easter eggs! You'll have to wrestle the remote off the football fans in the house today, as the FA Cup Replay between Chelsea and Manchester United kicks off at 12.45pm on UTV, with racing from Fairyhouse following not long after on RTE Two at 2.30pm. Sure you may as well give up hope until Corrie comes on at 7.30pm over on TV3. Doesn't everybody want to know if Sunita lives or dies?
There's plenty of rather decent drama to fill your Monday evening anyway, with Jonathan Creek returning to BBC One at 8.30pm and Broadchurch tearing up the screen on UTV at 9.00pm. We're loving the ITV murder mystery drama, and the plot just seems to thicken by the week. For something a little bit lighter, head over to RTE One at 9.30pm and catch See You At The Pictures, a nostalgic one-off look at the history of Irish cinema-going. It's followed by A Bit of A Fillum about the making of Ryan's Daughter in Dingle don'cha know! And if all of that isn't enough for you, tune in to The Republic of Telly on RTE Two at 10.35pm: Dermot, Jennifer and Bernard always deliver.
What We Will Be Watching
Sure isn't there only one thing we've been talking about for the past few weeks? Game of Thrones is back on our TV screens tonight, and though some of us here in the office have already seen episode 1 of Season 3, we'll probably end up switching over to Sky Atlantic at 9.00pm to have another gawk. If you're a die hard fan, tune in at 8.30pm, because Grace Dent will be sitting down to talk all things Thrones with the big fella himself, the one and only George RR Martin.
Pick Of The Flicks
We're excirah and delirah to see Mrs Doubtfire on RTE One at 3.35pm today. Robin Williams, Sally Field and Pierce Brosnan - sure what more could you want? There's a chance to catch Whoopi Goldberg Back In The Habit on BBC One at 3.30pm, before heading over to GOLD for My Best Friend's Wedding at 5.00pm. Alternatively, you can head to Hogwarts with Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince on TG4 at 4.00pm, and stick around to catch The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen at 9.30pm.Finally, there's a chance to round off the Bank Holiday Weekend with a bit of Channing Tatum and Ryan Philippe in Stop Loss on RTE Two at 11.50pm.
So, there you have it. Four days of televisual fun for all the family. Until next time, Happy Easter!
