It’s pretty insane how big Mixed Martial Arts (or MMA) has become over the past couple of years in particular. Coming from a place in the early 90s where it was seen as ‘barbaric’ to a fully fledged phenomenon - thanks mostly to The UFC - a lot of the fighters are now firmly household names.
There have been a couple of mainstream movies about the sport - the incredible Warrior and the not so incredible Here Comes the Boom - so it was probably a matter of time before a TV series about the MMA came along. Just not with one of the bleedin’ Jonas Brothers playing a fighter.
Yep, you heard us, Nick Jonas, the dreamboat youngest sibling from the hip thrusting boy band, The Jonas Brothers, is acting now, and he’s been hired to play a fighter in a Direct TV series, reports BJ Penn.
The 10-episode series will be titled "Navy St.", and will see Jonas star opposite Friday Night Lights actor Matt Lauria and Frank Grillo, of Warrior fame. Plot centres on Jonas’ character who manages to bag a UFC contract, while Grillo is his old man who runs an MMA gym in LA; he was a fighter, but never made it because he liked the auld drugs too much. We smell Daaaaaaaddy issues...
Someone let the producers know that there are plenty of UFC fighters who can actually act; Forrest Griffin, Chael Sonnen, Rhonda Rousey and Conor McGregor, we’re looking at you. But with The UFC being mentioned they obviously have rights, so the fighters should pop up.
The series will premiere in Autumn sometime.
