The D23 Expo this weekend revealed a huge amount of news about Disney's streaming service.
If you've been following the D23 Expo this weekend, a number of big stories have come out of it concerning Disney+, the Mouse House's answer to Netflix.
The first-ever live-action 'Star Wars' TV series, 'The Mandalorian', got a trailer. Ewan McGregor confirmed at long last that he's returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a live -action 'Star Wars' TV series. Jeff Goldblum's getting a documentary series. 'Lady and the Tramp' is getting a live-action movie because, d'uh, of course it is. And, on top of all that, we finally have a vague notion of when Disney+ will launch in Ireland.
Previously, there had been no indication that the streaming service would or wouldn't launch on the same date in the US as it would anywhere else. However, it was officially confirmed that a staggered launch is set to take place for the streaming service.
Per CNET, Disney+ will launch in "Western Europe" over a period of six months between October of this year and March of next year. The US launch will happen on November 12th, so odds are it'll be shortly thereafter in Ireland and the UK. While no specific reason has been given for the delay, the most likely reason has to do with either content licensing deals with the likes of Netflix, and the actual infrastructure that needs to be set up and tested before launch.
Pricing was announced in the US at $7 per month, or an annual fee of $70 - which significantly undercuts Netflix's $13 a month fee. On top of that, Disney+ will be the only place online after its launch where you'll get to see any of Disney's movies, TV shows, or original series and movies. It's not yet known if Disney+ will launch at a similar price here in Ireland, but CNET reports that the streaming service will be priced at €7 a month or €70 a year in the Netherlands, and will presumably be the same price across Western Europe.
As you'd expect, Disney+ will be available via Chromecast, Xbox One, PS4, and phones and TVs running Android operating systems, not to mention Apple TV and casting via iPhone or iPad.
For now, the only question is when exactly it'll become available. Expect an actual date on that some time after November 12th.
