But this is all still much further down the line
With season three being the likely end to the series, a potential spin-off could be on the cards.
By the sounds of it, a 'Derry Girls' spin-off is weighing on the mind of series creator Lisa McGee. McGee, who introduced the world to the complexities (and the comedy) of Northern Irish living during the '90s, has stated that a vague idea is forming in her head of what could come next for the band of friends.
McGee was speaking this week with Ray D'Arcy on his RTE Radio 1 show when she dropped the tidbits of new information. She said: "For a while I didn’t know if it would work but now an idea is starting to vaguely form in my head.
"So after series three I’ll think about that a bit more. I’d like to do it and I think the cast would too so that would be the long-term plan."
Whether this 'Derry Girls' spin-off comes to fruition further down the line, in terms of being a new TV series following one of the characters, or a final movie, we'll have to wait and see.
Before all of this however, season three has yet to begin filming - and it's said to be the final instalment. The news was previously teased by comedian Tommy Tiernan, who plays Da Gerry, when he was also speaking on a radio show earlier this year. Speaking on the Jason Manford Show, Tiernan said: "This is the last series, I think. As far as I know this is the very last series."
Unfortunately, due to everything going on in the world recently, production on the sitcom has been halted. McGee told D'Arcy that the crew are working hard behind the scenes to ensure filming can start in the near future: "We should have been shooting it now but we obviously had to push back. We are waiting until it’s safe as there’s a lot of stuff to work out.
"The show is quite complicated to film in these circumstances and we want to do it as well as we possibly can. We want it to be brilliant so we’re trying to figure a lot of stuff out at the minute but I think we’ll get there."
Expect the third season to arrive at some point in 2021. The comedy series was cast haphazardly into the spotlight by Netflix recently, who was forced to remove the second series from the streaming service after just a few days. There's been no confirmation yet on when it will be returning.
