The TV and film star died peacefully at home of natural causes.
Dean Stockwell, whose TV and film career spanned over seven decades, has passed away at the age of 85.
According to a representative of his family who spoke to Deadline, he died peacefully at home of natural causes in the early morning of Sunday, November 7.
Stockwell's most notable role to TV fans will be his portrayal of AdmiralĀ Al Calavicci in the '80s and '90s sci-fi/comedy series 'Quantum Leap'. The character was Sam Beckett's (played by Scott Bakula) best friend and holographic companion on the series.
That's not the only role he was known for, however. Dean Stockwell was an Oscar and Emmy-nominated actor whose career spanned various roles on stage, in film and on TV. A child actor on Broadway at the young age of seven, he appeared with Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly in 'Anchors Aweigh', and in 'Kim' with Errol Flynn.
Stockwell also played the role of Doctor Wellington Yueh in David Lynch's 1984 sci-fi film 'Dune' and the role of The Tiger in 'Married to the Mob' which also starred Michelle Pfeiffer, Alec Baldwin and Joan Cusack. He was also in 'Air Force One' starring Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman.
Stockwell officially retired from acting in 2015 and forged a brief career in art under his full name, Robert Dean Stockwell.
It has often been anticipated that the TV series people will know him most for, 'Quantum Leap', would be getting a modern-day revival. While Stockwell wasn't thought to be part of the discussions around the project, his co-star Scott Bakula said earlier this year that "significant conversations" were happening.
Dean Stockwell is survived by his wife and their two children.
