'The Batman' spinoff is a-go
Currently whipping up at storm at the box office is Matt Reeves' 'The Batman' starring Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader. However, it's another character from the action film that's been getting a lot of attention.
Colin Farrell's Penguin series is officially greenlit for HBO Max. 'The Batman' spinoff will have a limited series run on the streaming service.
Matt Reeves' "Warner Bros. gangster movie" is lighting up cinema screens across the globe at the moment, but the journey will continue on the small screen. The infamous Batman villain based on the character first created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger for DC will rise through the ranks of Gotham's criminal underworld in his own limited run.
Initially thought to be in the works late last year, and referenced by both Reeves and Farrell in Brian Lloyd's interviews with the two creators, the series has been officially announced for HBO Max.
The Penguin series will see Colin Farrell return to the character, also known by his real name of Oswald Cobblepot. Speaking to us last month about the series and this different take on the character, Farrell told us: "I wanted more. I get greedy. The character was so much fun and I felt like there was so much exploration that we could have ventured into.
"And now we'll get the chance to do that with the TV show and check out his origin and see what life is like just parallel to this other world that is the central world of Bruce Wayne."
When we caught up with Reeves ahead of the release of 'The Batman', he said he had an idea of creating "almost like a 'Scarface' story for Penguin" meets "an American Dream story that takes place in Gotham" series for HBO Max.
You can catch Matt Reeves talking about Colin Farrell's Penguin in our exclusive interview with the director below (beginning from the 10 minutes 30 seconds mark - but watch the whole interview while you're at it, go on).
And sure while you're at it, here's our full interview with Colin Farrell too.
