Since the show's inception, Carl was voiced by Hank Azaria, but from now on, Alex Désert will take over the role.
If you're one of the few people who still watches new episodes of 'The Simpsons', you'll notice from now on that Carl's voice is different from what it's been up to now.
As you're probably aware, 'The Simpsons' has been under some scrutiny for the last few years over how it has cast some characters of colour, the most notable one being Apu and Hank Azaria voicing the character.
Variety is now reporting that Carl Carlson - yes, that's his surname - is now no longer voiced by Hank Azaria, but by Alex Désert. The change comes as producers on 'The Simpsons' confirmed earlier this year that it would no longer have white actors voice non-white characters on the show, meaning that the likes of Dr. Hibbert, Apu, or Lou will be recast with different voices.
Désert is an established voice actor, having played the voice of Nick Fury in the animated series, 'The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes', and voiced characters in shows such as 'Doc McStuffins' and Adult Swim's 'Mr Pickles'.
The Season 32 opening episode sees Mr. Burns go undercover in the nuclear plant in an attempt to find out if his employees like him, causing him to have massive surgery to change his voice and appearance. His new voice and look just so happens to be that of David Harbour of 'Stranger Things' fame, which is cool and all, but shouldn't this series have been cancelled years ago? Does anyone really care about 'The Simpsons' any more? Doesn't the fact that it's only now casting voice actors of colour for characters of colours not say a lot about it?
Answers on a postcard, folks.
