Anne Robinson, you are the new host of 'Countdown'. Goodbye.
Although most of us remember Richard Whiteley as the host of 'Countdown', Nick Hewer has been in the role for going on 10 years.
Today, Hewer announced that he was leaving the show and will be replaced by none other than Anne Robinson of 'The Weakest Link'. Robinson will be the first woman to lead the show, and the sixth overall host.
Past hosts include Des Lynam, Des O'Connor, and Jeff Stelling. Speaking on Channel 4's midday talk show, 'Steph's Packed Lunch', Robinson said she was "beyond thrilled to be joining, and declared 'Countdown' to be "almost as old as I am and just as historic."
Robinson also praised Susie Dent and Rachel Riley on the show, adding that "(worryingly), Susie and Rachel are not only very smart but younger, prettier and thinner than me. Sadly, there's no time for another face lift so I'll have make do with this old one."
See, that's the kind of witty repartee we can expect from Anne Robinson in the role. Fantastic stuff. Hewer announced at the start of the year that he would be stepping down from the role, though his replacement had not yet been announced at the time.
And just to wrap it all up, here's how they announced Anne Robinson as the host.
