The Tonight Show host will present the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony in January 2017. He will be taking the reins from British comedian Ricky Gervais who hosted the show last year and from 2010 to 2012. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted from 2013 to 2015.

The news was announced today by NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Beverly Hills.

Greenbratt said: “This is the most spontaneous and uninhibited award show on television, and Jimmy’s playful, disarming comedic brilliance makes him the ideal host to enhance and elevate the sense of fun and irreverence that’s made the Golden Globes one of the premier events of the entire broadcast year.”

Here’s how Fallon announced the news on Twitter:

Gervais' un-PC openers were known for putting a few critics on edge, which may be why Fallon was chosen for his comparatively 'safer' sense of humour. Here's hoping the talk show host will bring a sharp sense of wit to the ceremony, or if he does decide to make it all a bit silly, that it will work in the show's format.
