1. Penny Dreadful
This is certainly a box set that will have you checking under your bed tonight. This psychological thriller set in Victorian London features a fantastic cast including Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green, with Skyfall and Spectre's John Logan and Sam Mendes at the helm. It sees some of literature's most iconic characters from Frankenstein to Dorian Gray come together in this Gothic horror with their stories all weaved together in what makes for an altogether dark and terrifying tale. The series was shot in its entirety in Ireland so you can also play the 'I know that place!' game too as you'll see some well-known locations transformed into a very eery Victorian London.
2. The Enfield Haunting
Nope, this isn't about a town in County Meath, rather a real life haunted house in London in the seventies which this supernatural drama is based on. Starring Timothy Spall, Matthew Macfadyen, and Juliet Stevenson, it sees amateur paranormal investigator Maurice Grosse (Spall) fascinated by the inexplicable incidents that seem to be happening at this London home and heads over to meet the family and stay the night. We won't say too much but be prepared to have the blankie at the ready for this one...
3. The Blacklist
This hugely popular American crime drama is just heading into its third season on Sky but you can catch the previous two in the box sets. Okay, it doesn't deal with ghost and ghouls but rather in catching the real life folk who terrorise people. It follows the story of one of the world's most wanted fugitives, a criminal mastermind by the name of Raymond 'Red' Reddington (James Spader), who surrenders himself to the FBI claiming to have vital information on dangerous criminals and terrorists who have never been brought to justice. However, Red has one condition - he will only speak to rookie profiler Liz, and nobody knows why he is so interested in her. See? It's creepy already.
4. Hannibal
No need to explain why this one will have you double locking the doors. It's about a dude who gets his kicks out of eating humans for crying out loud. Season one begins in Hannibal Lector's early days, before he whiled away his time terrorising Jodie Foster. It sees the young Dr Lector assisting the FBI with tracking serial killers all the while being the best of them himself. Suffice to say though, as utterly brilliant as this show is, it's not for the faint-hearted - although the clue is in the title there.
5. Criminal Minds
Another show that may not focus on the occult but still features many a character you would definitely not want to meet down a dark alleyway. Currently on its eleventh season, it's unlikely you haven't caught an episode of Criminal Minds at some stage, but just in case you haven't. it follows an elite squad of FBI agents who analyse America's most-twisted criminal minds, anticipating the perpetrators' next moves before they can strike again. Given that the series' all run in episodic format, it's a show that makes for a pretty solid guarantee for an hour's entertainment if you don't want to commit to an entire box set.
