In December 2012, Lisa Swanson's son Levi Schulz died in a car crash at the tender age of 18.
Out of that tragedy came a lifeline for Terry Hooper who'd been suffering from cardiomyopathy, a heart muscle disease where the organ loses its ability to pump blood. Schulz's body was kept on life support for three days so that his organs could be used to save others and nearly four years on Terry Hooper is in good health as a result of the that decision.
Lisa and Terry exchanged emails and letters in the years since Hooper's surgery but the first time the two met was on April 1st when Lisa was able to listen to her son's heart beat.
“It definitely sounds like it belongs there,” said Lisa. “I get happiness and sadness all at the same time. Sad that my son’s not here but happy that he was able to help Terry.”
