A brand new documentary about Ireland's mixed martial arts phenom Conor McGregor will debut on your TV screens next week.
The Notorious: Reality Bites, which will be broadcast on RTE Two at 9.30pm on Thursday 13th March, follows the Crumlin native as he journeys towards superstardom in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Detailing the most important six month period of McGregor's career, the documentary crew were allowed unprecedented access to the Irishman and chronicled the lead-in to McGregor's second fight in the UFC in Boston last August against Hawaiian Max Holloway.
McGregor has shot to fame in the MMA world since his debut for the UFC in Sweden in April of last year, where he knocked out US fighter Marcus Brimage in just 67 seconds. Brimage was undefeated in the UFC until he stood opposite McGregor in the Octagon and, perhaps interestingly, hasn't fought since his blitzing at the hands of the Irishman. Following this incredibly impressive performance McGregor's profile has increased across the globe, revealing a world class athlete and giving weight to Ryan Tubridy's tag of him being "the Irish Muhammad Ali."
In fact, given that MMA is now in the midst of a popularity boom worldwide there is a serious case to be made that McGregor is now among Ireland's most prominent sports stars on a global stage.
Always unique, thoughtful, insightful and with a drive and work ethic almost unlike anyone else in the sport, McGregor is a a prodigious talent and you'll see exactly why when you tune in to RTE Two on Thursday week. Highly recommended.
