Almost 80,000 Irish bought cars and vans under the Volkswagen umbrella are being recalled so the company can "correct the emission characteristics" of the vehicles.

The vehicles contain engines with software which gives inaccurate emissions test results, and can be found in Volkwagen, Audi, SEAT, and Skoda cars.

The software is present in 1.2-litre, 1.6-litre and 2-litre engines produced by those companies between 2008 and 2014.

A further 30,000 imported vehicles could possibly also have the same software, but VW have put a definitive number on the amount of imported cars in the country just yet.

The breakdown for the cars goes as such, with Volkswagen passenger cars making up 34,387, Audi having 16,485, Skoda a close third with 16,004, and SEAT with  just 4,365. Volkswagen commercial vehicles  made up a further 8,107, which brings the overall total to 79,348.
