The incident happened live on stage Tuesday night
The comedian was performing his set at the 'Netflix Is A Joke Festival' at the Hollywood Bowl in LA.
Stand-up comic Dave Chappelle was assaulted on stage Tuesday night by a man who was armed with a replica gun. The accuser rushed on stage and attempted to rugby tackle the performer at the end of his set.
Video footage has been released of the incident by those who were in attendance for the 'Netflix Is A Joke Festival'. The comic had no injuries following the incident.
Here's the moment the Dave Chappelle assault happened.
According to Brianna Sacks, a reporter at the show, "a man charged and tackled" Chappelle just as the show was ending. The man in question has since been detained. However, the reporter also said security at the event "rushed and started punching and kicking the s*** out of Chappelle's attacker". A video also shows the attacked being loaded into an ambulance with a dislocated or broken arm.
Actor Jamie Foxx is believed to have been one of the people who tried to help Dave Chappelle after the assault. The stand-up comic said: "Whenever you’re in trouble, Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff’s hat." CNBC reported that the attacker had a replica gun that ejects a knife blade when discharged.
Chris Rock was also in attendance at the comedy festival, and is believed to have come out on stage following the incident and asked that audience, "Was it Will Smith?"
Jimmy Carr was also at the Netflix event, tweeting he's "happy everyone's ok".
In video footage after the attack at the event (which was supposed to be a phone-free space), Chappelle said: "It was a trans man".
The comedian has been criticised for his jokes about the trans community in the past. He faced backlash last year for his 2021 Netflix special 'The Closer' where he made fun of trans women and their bodies.
