The veteran actor died at the age of 88

The world lost one of its acting greats yesterday with the passing of Donald Sutherland. The 88-year-old died in Miami on Thursday following a long illness.

A movie industry veteran, Sutherland was known for some truly iconic performances during his career in the likes of 'The Dirty Dozen', 'MASH', 'Don't Look Now' and 'Klute' as well as 'Animal House', 'Ordinary People', 'Pride & Prejudice' and 'The Hunger Games'.

His son, Emmy-winning '24' and 'Designated Survivor' actor Kiefer Sutherland led the tributes to his father. He posted: "With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more."

British actress Helen Mirren, who worked with Sutherland on 2017's 'The Leisure Seeker' along with1990 drama 'Bethune: The Making Of A Hero', told PA: "Donald Sutherland was one of the smartest actors I ever worked with. He had a wonderful enquiring brain and a great knowledge on a wide variety of subjects. He combined this great intelligence with a deep sensitivity and with a seriousness about his profession as an actor. This all made him into the legend of film that he became."

Sutherland is survived by his wife Francine Racette, sons Roeg, Rossif, Angus and Kiefer, daughter Rachel, and four grandchildren.
