In one of the more awkward moments of Sunday night’s Golden Globes, you might recall how James Franco, upon winning the award for Best Actor (Musical/Comedy) for The Disaster Artist, invited Tommy Wiseau onto the stage but blocked Wiseau from the microphone before he could speak.
Given Franco played Wiseau in the film, some felt Franco owed it to Wiseau to give the actor an opportunity to speak. Others defended Franco saying it was his performance and his award, and therefore his moment to shine.
Wiseau, in any case, told the LA Times in the aftermath of the ceremony that there were no hard feelings and that he couldn’t feel happier for Franco, who directed The Disaster Artist as well as playing the lead, and his brother, Dave Franco, who co-starred in the film.
“He did such a great job, talking as a director and an actor,” Wiseau said. “I think he make a big effort, which sometimes from the outside is extremely difficult to understand that. He did good with accent. His brother Dave did good as well. They really studied character. But he doesn’t know how to throw football, that’s for sure!”
He told the publication that had he been given the floor, he would have said: “If a lot of people loved each other, the world would be a better place to live. See The Room, have fun, and enjoy life. The American Dream is alive, and it's real.”
