Last week, the 2016 Dublin Marathon sold out over two months in advance, leaving many runners disappointed at missing out on a chance to see our capital city and its environs in a pretty unique painful way.
Although several warnings were issued by organisers that they were close to reaching full capacity, it seems that a lot of people missed out on nabbing a space.
The marathon is taking place on the Sunday of the October Bank Holiday weekend this year (October 30th) instead of the usual Monday; this, along with the special 2016 commemorative medal, lead to a lot of extra people taking on the challenge.
However, good news is in sight as an extra 2000 spots have been announced, bringing the capacity of this year's marathon to a whopping 19,500 people.
They released a statement via Facebook that said:
"Following consultation with the relevant authorities, we're delighted to announce that we will be increasing our SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon race capacity from 17,500 to 19,500 in order to cater for the increase in demand this year.
The 2,000 entries will be allocated to participants registered on our Marathon waiting list & we will be contacting everyone on Wednesday 31st August.
For more information on our event, visit our website on: www.sseairtricitydublinmarathon.ie".
If you're interested, best sign up to the waiting list now - spots will not be allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis, so you're in with as good a chance as any.
