Undoubtedly, Fyre Festival has been one of our favourite celebrity stories to cover this - primarily because of the tasty morsels of schadenfreude we get every time there's news about it.
This latest bit of dirt, however, is just too much and we might need to sit down. Billy McFarland, the CE-Bro of Fyre Festival, has been arrested and charged with wire fraud. If convicted, McFarland faces up to 20 years in jail.
In case you're feeling a bit sad for McFarland, it's worth pointing out that he was actually planning to host another festival next year and, to make up for all the 'mistakes from this one, he was planning on making a donation for each ticket sold. How much? $1.50 for every ticket sold, and a standard ticket to Fyre cost $450. He also allegedly told A-listers who were attending to stay away from the festival, but was happy enough to let everyone else come to the island.
McFarland is due to stand before a judge today, with the trial due to get underway pretty soon. Speaking just after he was taken into custody, US attorney Joon Kim slammed McFarland, saying that he "promised a ‘life changing’ music festival but in actuality delivered a disaster."
"McFarland allegedly presented fake documents to induce investors to put over a million dollars into his company and the fiasco called the Fyre Festival. Thanks to the investigative efforts of the FBI, McFarland will now have to answer for his crimes."
As well as all this, there's ELEVEN civil lawsuits pending against McFarland and Fyre Festival - six class-action lawsuits, five private suits for investors and vendors - and they're all sharing evidence and resources to build their case.
It's not yet known, however, where Ja Rule - who was also heavily involved in Fyre Festival - fits into all of this. He wasn't named by the prosecuting attorney, and he hasn't mentioned Fyre Festival on any of his social media since the event - but it's quite possible he may be wrapped up into any of the civil lawsuits against the festival as a whole, as he was being touted as one of the founders of Fyre Media.
Either way, this story isn't yet - and there is a CRACKING documentary just waiting to be made about all this.
