The legendary actor was treated in hospital following the violent incident
It was just last week that Steve Buscemi was confirmed amongst the cast of Season 2 of 'Wednesday'.
The 66-year-old will join the likes of Jenna Ortega, Christopher Lloyd and Billie Piper in the Netflix series, which has already begun filming in Ireland.
However, first Buscemi had to deal with an incident in his native New York, where he was the victim of a violent attack last week when he was punched in the face by an unknown assailant.
The New York Post reported that he was walking through the Kips Bay neighbourhood of Manhattan around midday last Wednesday when he was assaulted. It is one of several high-profile random attacks to have taken place in the city in recent times, following similar incidents involving Rick Moranis and Buscemi's 'Boardwalk Empire' co-star Michael Stuhlbarg.
Buscemi's publicist confirmed the incident, releasing a statement that said “Steve Buscemi was assaulted in Midtown Manhattan, another victim of a random act of violence in the city. He is OK and appreciates everyone’s well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to while also walking the streets of N.Y."
He was taken to New York's Bellevue Hospital following the attack, where he was treated for bruising, swelling and bleeding in his left eye.
NYPD have released a photo of his attacker, who fled following the incident and has not yet been apprehended.
