After receiving a number of fans and accolades for his portrayal of Deadpool in the best superhero movie of the year (sorry Captain America, but it’s true), Reynolds has topped it all by receiving a nomination for Best Actor in the Musical/Comedy category at this year’s Golden Globes. Deadpool was itself nominated for Best Motion Picture, Musical/Comedy.

Reynolds tweeted out the following upon hearing the news:

He has since revealed to EW, in his typical cheeky sense of humour, as well as once again proving himself a devout family man, that he was in the middle of a pretty messy job when he found out the news. ‘Yeah, I was staring down the barrel of one hell of a dirty diaper,’ he explains. ‘I heard my phone and I knew that could only mean one thing: A family member had died. My brother finally ate it.’

He said the diaper was disposed of, and then the news really hit him. ‘It is meaningful to me. I’ve been acting professionally for 25 years, to varying degrees of success, and it’s a special moment to see something that you’ve stuck with for the long game pay off.

‘There were many times when I thought this movie wouldn’t ever be made or it would made 20 years in the future, when I’d be too geriatric to be in it.’

The movie Deadpool has also made Golden Globe history for being the first comic-book superhero movie to be nominated in the Best Motion Picture category. It is also the first comic-book superhero movie to get more than one Golden Globe nomination.

Reynolds added: ‘I was shocked and happy to see that we were nominated in two categories. Seeing the movie nominated is a real glass ceiling moment for the genre.

‘I’ve always said that I wish the Oscars had a category for comedy as well. It’s not an easy job. Oftentimes with comedies you have to have some pathos and real grit that in turn earns you the right to subvert expectations and be funny. It takes a lot of construction. And Rhett Reece and Paul Wernick, our writers, are amazing architects.’
