Frances Bean Cobain has never before revealed that she had a problem with addiction, so her Instagram post yesterday came as a surprise to many.
The daughter of Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain said that she had struggled with addiction problems in the past, but that she was marking her two-year sober anniversary by sharing her story.
The lengthy post - which was accompanied by a picture of the 25-year-old in Oahu, Hawaii - said "It’s an interesting and kaleidoscopic decision to share my feelings about something so intimate in a public forum . The fact that I’m sober isn’t really public knowledge, decidedly and deliberately. But I think it’s more important to put aside my fear about being judged or misunderstood or typecast as one specific thing."
While she didn't specify whether her addiction was drugs or alcohol-related (or both), she did say that it's "an everyday battle to be in attendance for all the painful, bazaar, uncomfortable, tragic, fucked up things that have ever happened or will ever happen. Self destruction, toxic consumption and deliverance from pain is a lot easier to adhere to. Undeniably, for myself and those around me choosing to be present is the best decision I have ever made."
Cobain was divorced from her musician husband Isaiah Silva last November, after three years of marriage.
