"My intention was to make them laugh not cause pain"
Octavia Spencer has issued an apology for a comment she left on Britney Spears' Instagram which upset fans of the singer.
Last weekend saw Britney announce her engagement to Sam Asghari. Octavia Spencer left a comment on the Instagram post announcing the news reading: "make him sign a prenup."
Sam Asghari responded to the comment jokingly writing in his stories: "Thank you everyone who is concerned about The prenup!
"Of course we're getting iron clad prenup to protect my jeep and shoe collection incase [sic] she dumps me one day ."
Octavia Spencer wanted to clarify that what she said was meant in good humour and that she is sorry for any hurt caused.
Sharing a picture of the newly engaged couple, the star of 'The Help' wrote: "Y'all, a few days ago Sam and Britney announced their engagement and me being me I made a joke.
"My intention was to make them laugh not cause pain."
She continues: "I've reached out to this lovely couple privately to apologize and now want to restore just a smidge of happiness they were robbed of.
"Britney's fans have seen her through a lot of pain and she's found happiness. We're thrilled for her. So let's show them love."
Spencer added the hashtag #nonegativity
The news comes shortly after Britney Spears announced she is taking time off social media. She said she wants to enjoy and celebrate her engagement to Sam.
