Being a night owl might seem like a cool thing to be, but a new study has shown that it's pretty much not the case at all.
A study from the University of Barcelona has found that night owls are more likely to suffer from mood disorders, depression and mental illness. The study's author, Ana Adna, said that "several studies have linked different circadian rhythm genes with the development of mood disorders, schizophrenia and drug consumption."
"Evening-type subjects are well-known social jet lag sufferers, as they must develop a behavioral pattern in order to adapt to the social schedule which tends to be oriented towards "morningness," she explained.
The study, which tested 700 psychology students from the ages of 18 to 32, found that evening-type subjects were more adventurous, creative and willing to "explore the unknown" than those who were early risers.
Unsurprisingly, it found that early risers were more resistant to fatigue, frustration and difficulties, which translates into lower levels of anxiety and lower rates of depression, higher life satisfaction and less likelihood of substance abuse.
So if you're staying up late watching Netflix or playing videogames, you're wasting your life. Got it.
