Police had to be called to a sci-fi convention in Norwich on Sunday after two rival groups got into a scrap. The Norwich Sci-Fi and Film Convention was taking place at the University of East Anglia and had been organised by the Norwich Star Wars Club when the dust up happened. Apparently members from the rival Norwich Sci-Fi Club arrived to get autographs from two Doctor Who actors present, and the longstanding Sharks vs. Jets atmosphere was just too much for the overstimulated, testosterone filled fans.
When Jim Poole and his mate dressed as the Fifth Doctor arrived on the scene to get their Who fill for the week, they received verbal abuse from a 10th Doctor and a Judge Dredd. Someone called the cops when the whole affair got heated and all four had to be sat down and given a firm talking to by authorities because they were acting like man-children. 'This wasn't a fight between Star Wars fans and Doctor Who fans with lightsabers and sonic screwdrivers drawn. It's a bit sad and pathetic' Poole said, obviously scarlet that he's now fending off press attention. Poole is now considering having guards at his own convention but hopes to make peace, with the two clubs organising a meeting to resolve their issues soon. Fingers crossed they settle it without having to resort to more name-calling, or God forbid, a Dungeons & Dragons showdown.
