They're grrreat never sounded so good.
Lee Marshall, who will be best remembered for his role as Tony the Tiger in the Frosties ads, has passed away at the age of 64.
The Los Angeles Times published a touching obituary to him in which they outlined a few of his other jobs and characters as a voice actor, and with a deep, rumbling voice that we all grew to know and love as Tony, he was ideal for cartoon villains also. According to the obituary, he once complained to his agent that he “would just once like to be the guy who saves Scooby-Doo”.
That was never likely to be a runner, but there were plenty of other options for him, like being an interviewer and ring announcer in the world of wrestling. One of his good friends was none other than Diamond Dallas Page, who also paid him a tribute this week:
Marshall first started voicing Tony the Tiger in 1999, helping out the man who originally made Tony famous, Thurl Ravenscroft as he aged and found it more difficult. Marshall also worked as a DJ for rap and rock stations, a job which he started when he was just 14-years-old and lied about his age to get the gig.
He had many friends and admirers thanks to his jovial personality and his booming voice that made him so famous, and he will be fondly remembered.
