Last week US cable station HBO broadcast a documentary on Scientology that pretty much went to town on the church and some of its higher profile members - notably John Travolta and Tom Cruise.
Oscar winning filmmaker Alex Gibney is behind the doc, called Going Clear, and in it he interviews many former high ranking members of the church, who are collectively scathing of their time involved with it.
While Tom Cruise is yet to comment, Travolta has spoken with The Tampa Bay Times, who asked him if he'd seen Going Clear. He was pretty clear himself saying, “No, I haven’t,and I don’t really care to."
He added.
“I haven’t experienced anything that the hearsay has (claimed), so why would I communicate something that wasn’t true for me?” Travolta said. “It wouldn’t make sense, nor would it for Tom, I imagine.” He added that Going Clear was basically “people who were disgruntled with their experiences” Saying, finally, “I’ve been brought through storms that were insurmountable, and (Scientology has) been so beautiful for me, that I can’t even imagine attacking it.”
Going Clear broke a ratings record for HBO, who reportedly hired over 160 lawyers to review the film before going forward with broadcast.
Scientology did sue the IRS, resulting in the American government writing off a ONE BILLION dollar tax bill, so... fair enough.
