He says his wife was given "food she was allergic to"
The late-night talk show host had a week off the air - but he still managed to remain in the spotlight.
James Corden had quite the week, even though he was supposed to be having some downtime. In case you missed it, the actor-turned-chat show host was accused of being "extremely nasty" to the staff of a well-known New York City restaurant, getting himself momentarily banned from the eatery.
The scathing remarks were published on Instagram by Balthazar restaurant owner Keith McNally, who describes two incidents of Corden acting like, let's face it, a bit of a diva. According to McNally, one of the occasions happened when Corden was with his wife, and following a kitchen mix-up he "began yelling like crazy".
After the restauranteur said he would be banning Corden from his premises, the chat show host called him up to apologise "profusely".
That same week, Corden was chatting with The New York Times when the incident was brought up. At the time, Corden commented: "I just think it's beneath all of us. It's beneath you. It's certainly beneath your publication."
James Corden has now returned to his hosting duties and has acknowledged the drama that unfolded while he was away. Admitting that he was "rude" and "ungracious", he then clarified that his wife had received food on her plate "which she was allergic to".
Then, after the order "came wrong to the table for the third time," Corden admits that "in the heat of the moment, I made a sarcastic, rude comment about cooking it myself".
He adds that it's a moment he "deeply regrets", having been a server in a restaurant himself for years.
Here's the full clip of the James Corden restaurant explainer.
So, was James Corden in the wrong - and does his apology make up for his treatment of the staff "in the heat of the moment"? Let's not forget that McNally described him as "the most abusive customer to my Balthazar servers since the restaurant opened 25 years ago". Now that's quite an achievement.
