Hmmmm....
"We realise it may have looked like something else and therefore totally understand the reaction."
If our neighbours love one thing more than The Queen, it's a queue. Well, actually, not all of them loved the late monarch, just like not everyone loves a queue - isn't that right, Holly and Phil? The 'This Morning' hosts were caught queue-jumping over the weekend as members of the public lined up to pay their respects to The Queen.
Before the 96-year-old was laid to rest yesterday, about a quarter of a million people lined up over the weekend in order to have a few seconds with The Queen's casket in Westminster Hall. Some attendees waited for up to 17 hours for the moment in a queue that was reportedly five miles long.
All seemed to be in tip-top shape in terms of the line, even Tilda Swinton was seen queuing overnight, except for one TV couple who appeared to jump the queue. Yep, videos of Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield were shared all over the internet of them entering Westminster Hall by using the press line. However, Willoughby said in a pre-recorded statement on Tuesday's edition of 'This Morning' that they did not skip the queue as they were given "official permission" to enter the Hall.
Willoughby said in a voice-over: "Like hundreds of accredited broadcasters and journalists, we were given official permission to access the Hall. It was strictly for the purpose of reporting on the event for millions of people in the U.K. who haven’t been able to visit Westminster in person.
"The rules were that we would be quickly escorted around the edges to a platform to the back. In contrast, those paying respects walked along a carpeted area beside the coffin and were given time to pause. None of the broadcasters and journalists there took anyone’s place in the queue and no-one filed past the Queen. We of course respected those rules however we realise it may have looked like something else and therefore totally understand the reaction.
"Please know that we would never jump a queue."
Here's a recording of the statement, which hasn't officially been uploaded online.
It shouldn't be a surprise, but the Holly and Phil queue-jumping explanation has not been received that well on Twitter.
