Conor McGregor is no stranger to controversy and, for the most part, embraces it as part as of his position of one of UFC's biggest draws.
Last night, a Facebook post that was shared several hundred times pointed to an image of McGregor at UFC Dublin wearing a small poppy pin. The poppy, a symbol of remembrance for soldiers who have died in war, has a certain amount of resonance for both Irish and English people.
It is, however, also heavily associated with the British Army who obviously have a deep, often troubled history with Ireland. McGregor angrily responded to the claim of hypocrisy on his part by wearing a poppy, saying that he knew where his allegiance lay.
The post drew a huge amount of criticism online, with some arguing that it was insensitive for McGregor to equate himself to actual soldiers whereas others found the final sentence more offensive.
McGregor then took to Twitter later last night and responded to his previous statement.
Fuck politics and fuck religion. I just want to swing a few lefts and a few rights for a couple of hundred mill in peace.

So, there you have it. As you can imagine, McGregor's mentions on Twitter are lined with the usual amount of shite from both sides.
The UFC star is quickly finding out what it's like to be a household name and have a lot of the stuff you say/do resonate around the world.
