Followers of the boy wizard (who has generated renewed interest of late with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and new flick Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) are frustrated by wand maker Richard Carter.
Carter, who owns the shop Mystical Moments in Huddersfield, supplies wands to be used only for good, casting healing spells, protective circles, or good luck charms. They can ward off evil or illness, and bring wealth or love.
But recently Mr Carter banned Harry Potter fans from his shop, saying the wands are not play things but really magic.
He said, ‘JK Rowling has obviously done her research but Harry Potter is for children. It has done nothing for business.
'You wouldn’t believe how many real witches and wizards there are knocking about. You would be amazed. They know they can come here and reveal themselves without people thinking they’re mental.
'I don’t have customers who have been Harry Potterfied. If I had someone come in wanting a wand just because they liked Harry Potter I would not sell them one, no matter how much they were offering.'
At the same time, the set-up is very like that of J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world, in which magic wielding young’uns purchase wands in Olivander’s shop in Diagon Alley. In Mystical Moments, customers also visit the shop, choose a wand that catches their eye and hold it to see if it has the ‘right feel.’
Potter fans have complained, including Mariella May who stated: ‘It is so stupid. it is like McDonald’s refusing to sell happy meals to sad people. They could be selling thousands of wands if they weren’t so snobbish.’
