The 'Wonder Woman' star is a former Israeli Defense Forces fighter
Gal Gadot shared a statement on social media regarding the ongoing Israel-Hamas rocket attacks conflict, which she is now getting a backlash for.
Best-known as the star of 'Wonder Woman', Gal Gadot was born in Israel and served a mandatory two years as a soldier in the Israel Defense Forces.
In a statement shared on Twitter and Instagram, the actress wrote: "My heart breaks. My country is at war.
"I worry for my family, my friends. I worry for my people. This is a vicious cycle that has been going on for far too long. Israel deserves to live as a free and safe nation. Our neighbours deserve the same.
"I pray for the victims and their families, I pray for this unimaginable hostility to end, I pray for our leaders to find the solution so we could live side by side in peace. I pray for better days."
Social media users called out Gal Gadot for using the work "neighbours" instead of referencing Palestine by name. They also criticised her support of Israel during the country’s violent attacks on Palestine.
Some Twitter users began criticising her role as Wonder Woman. Others accused her of being a "propaganda tool" for Israel.
While a number of people backed the actress' call for peace, Gal Gadot disabled comments as they were becoming vitriolic, while leaving up her post.
This week, violence between Israel and Palestine escalated as Israel launched several airstrikes on Palestine’s Gaza Strip. Waves of rockets were fired from Gaza at Tel Aviv, the city of Ashkelon and the country’s main airport.
