With a name like O'Reilly, you can assume that someone has Irish roots of some kind.
One famous face that Irish people don't seem to want to claim, however, is former Fox News presenter and political commentator Bill O'Reilly.
O'Reilly was fired from the network last year after it had come to light that he had paid almost $50 million to six women to settle sexual harassment claims over the years; since then, he has presented the 'No Spin News' podcast.
However, he's currently in Ireland tracing his roots and specifically visited Cavan, "where [his] ancestors were evicted from their land in 1845" - and he's not getting the usual Irish welcome on Twitter, not least because of his insistence on political point-scoring with the 'legally' reference.
See his tweet and the reaction below:
Enjoying my time in Ireland. Visited County Cavan where my ancestors were evicted from their land in 1845. That forced them to come to America legally so they wouldn’t starve.
Pardon me if I reject the “white privilege” scenario if applied to my family. pic.twitter.com/gecXRy60YJ

Bollix - there was no “legal” immigration in 1845.
But I’m sure your ancestors would be proud you had to pay out $30m in sexual harassment claims.
America is not sending us their best people.

Because no one went to America illegally then it was open borders, now would you hurry up and leave my country, you are not welcome.

We don't want him back.

The obvious solution is to chuck him in the ocean.

You should have told us you were coming.
We would have closed all the curtains, turned off the lights and pretended not to be home

Not welcome #RefugeesWelcome

My maternal grandfather came from Co Cavan -they were also O'Reillys - my mother Rose O'Reilly would have said you shame the name, the county and the country. Leave quietly - you are not welcome.

Yeah fair warning Bill, the women there will put you in the ground long before you get a chance to pay them off for sexual harassment.

if only they could see their big handsome boy all grown up, building an empire from dirt, telling a woman that he wants to rub a falafel thing on her pussy and paying tens of millions of dollars in sexual harassment settlements, they’d be so proud of you bill ðŸ'œ

Can we evict you again?

Irelands ancient East, meet an American predatorial beast #topothemorningtoya

You know, it was a nice, wistful reminisce until you said "legally" and twisted it into a political statement. Same shite that has torn Ireland apart. Try to apply the same compassion that was shown to your own ancestors.
