Tinder has been known to get people into somewhat awkward situations in the past, but this one really does push the limits.

Phil Stephenson swiped and connected with a woman in Darlington, Northern England on Tinder. During the brief conversation with the woman he'd never met before, she informed him that her mother and sister were unable to go with her to Marmaris, a holiday resort town in Turkey.

As Stephenson described to the Northern Echo, the unnamed woman "gave me a big story about how her mam and sister couldn’t go and asked if I’d come - she didn’t have to ask me twice."

The twenty-two year old landed and made his way to Marmaris, just as military forces moved against the oppressive regime of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. For Stephenson, however, he wants to return home as soon as possible. Not just because of the events in Istanbul either.

"I think the girl thought she was getting a romantic holiday with me, but I just wanted a bit of banter. I thought we’d be going out every night and having wild times but now she’s going round and asking people about romantic restaurants," explained Stephenson.

"We got here and there were two single beds but she pushed them together - I told her I was upset about everything that was happening in Turkey and slept on the sofa."

Local reports suggest that the coup has failed and President Erdogan has made public statements that his government is in control, however Stephenson says he'd do it all over again. "I’ve never done anything like this before but if someone else asked me if I wanted to go on a free holiday, I’d do it again for a laugh."

For a laugh. Right.
