The People's Champ has laid the smackdown (inside a wrestling ring, anyway) for the last time.
Whether you watched it or not, most people would immediately associate Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson with professional wrestling.
Having begun his career in the WWE (then the WWF) in 1996 as Rocky Maivia, his louder-than-life persona as The Rock lead him to become arguably the most recognisable name in wrestling history alongside the likes of Hulk Hogan, 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin and Ric Flair.
However, Johnson hasn't wrestled professionally since 2016, where he appeared at WrestleMania 32 and set the record for the quickest match in WrestleMania history at 6 seconds. While nobody really expected Johnson to come back full-time as a wrestler, considering he's now one of the biggest movie stars in the world, it's a little sad to think that was his last time in the ring.
In an interview with 'Live With Kelly and Ryan', Johnson confirmed that he has "quietly retired" from wrestling. "I quietly retired from wrestling because I was lucky enough to have just a really wonderful career and accomplish what I wanted to accomplish," Johnson confirmed.
Johnson's first match was at Survivor Series in 1996 at Madison Square Garden, a moment he said he'd never forget. "It’s funny because I credit my time and journey in pro wrestling to have got me where I am today."
Considering how 'Hobbs & Shaw' is expected to smash box office records and is already receiving critical acclaim, it shouldn't come as any surprise that Johnson has drawn a line underneath wrestling once and for all.
With that in mind, please rise for the national anthem.
