Six trees are set to be cut down in the coming weeks

There are multiple locations in Northern Ireland that have become famous since featuring in 'Game of Thrones', and many of them remain tourist attractions despite the show ending in 2019.

One of the most famous (and photographed) is the Dark Hedges, which doubled as the Kingsroad in the fantasy TV series.

However, fans have reacted with dismay at the news that six of the unique beech trees are set to be cut down in the coming weeks, by order of Northern Ireland's Department of Infrastructure.

The trees are actually on private land that is accessible only by foot, and located on Bregagh Road near the villages of Straconum and Armoy in Co. Antrim.

The Department says that the condition of the trees in question - there are 86 remaining of the original 150 planted - have raised concerns, and some have blown down or been damaged in storms in recent times.

They released a statement saying: "Following concerns about the condition of some of the trees, the department commissioned an independent specialist survey which found that 11 trees, out of a total of 86, along this route are in a poor condition and could pose a potential risk to the public.

"The department immediately liaised with the relevant landowners and other stakeholders; however, given the urgency of the work required, arrangements have now been made to remove six of the trees (stump retained) and carry out remedial work to four trees, to reduce the risk to the wider public. The condition of one further tree will be assessed on site.

"This decision has not been made lightly and, whilst the amenity value afforded by the corridor of trees is acknowledged, the safety of road users is paramount. The department will continue to engage with landowners and other stakeholders regarding their implementation of a suitable management strategy to protect the future of the other 75 trees."

The work is set to be carried out before November 24th, when the area will be closed to the public.
