Danika McGuigan passed away following a short illness at the age of 33.

Danika McGuigan has passed away at the age of 33, following a short illness.

In a statement released to media by her family, it confirmed that the actress passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning. "It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beautiful daughter and sister, Danika ‘Nika’ McGuigan," the statement read.

McGuigan was the daughter of Irish boxing champion Barry McGuigan, and starred in 'Can't Cope, Won't Cope', Jim Sheridan's 'The Secret Scripture' and Rebecca Daly's 'Mammal' alongside Barry Keoghan and Michael McElhatton.

"As a family we are devastated and ask for complete privacy during this difficult period to allow us to grieve for our Nika," the statement concluded. Stefanie Preissner, who created 'Can't Cope, Won't Cope', offered her condolences on Twitter earlier, saying that the series "wouldn’t have been the same without her."

Danika's brother, Shane, posted an emotional statement on his Instagram, describing his sister's struggle with cancer. "She overcame it once with a 2 year fight when she was 11 to 13. Myself, my brothers & parents were privileged to have another 20 years since the first battle with our amazing Nika. Unfortunately Nika couldn’t beat it again but she fought so bravely until the end."

Danika is survived by her parents and three brothers.
